If you’ve ever been to any Modern Storage® location, one of the first things that’s sure to catch your eye is our moving trucks. Our 15-foot box trucks are an amazing amenity we offer to help new customers have smoother, safer, and less stressful moves.
New customers usually have a few questions before renting the moving truck, so we’re answering all the most common ones here for you today. Let this be your guide when you’re ready to move into your own storage unit!

For the first 30 days after moving in, new tenants renting anything larger than a 5x5 storage unit can take advantage of this amenity with no cost to reserve. This opportunity is only available once, so don’t wait!
In order to reserve a moving truck, you need to contact us to verify the truck is available for your preferred time and date. We will then need a copy of your driver’s license and car insurance policy at least 24 hours in advance. This is so we can contact your insurance agent and make sure you are covered for driving the truck.
The driver of the moving truck does not have to be the tenant, but they must have a valid driver's license and car insurance with comprehensive collision and liability insurance coverage for 15-foot box trucks.
With your reservation, we allow you to use the moving truck for up to four hours.
We typically book reservations for time slots of 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, but we are flexible in scheduling if the moving truck is available!
If you would like to use the truck longer that the four-hour time slot, you are welcome to schedule a paid rental. For a paid truck rental, you can rent the truck for the whole day if you’d like!
Those utilizing the free moving truck rental can drive up to 40 free miles. Any mileage over that amount will be charged a mileage fee of 60 cents per mile.
Every Modern Storage® facility charges $39 plus tax to rent a moving truck for the day, as well as the mileage fee (60 cents per mile).
If you compare these fees to what other local truck rentals cost, you still save money!
YES! To use our free moving truck when moving into your storage unit, just don't forget you need to request a reservation, provide us a copy of your driver’s license, and verify your insurance policy has comprehensive collision and liability insurance coverage for 15-foot box trucks.
When you arrive, we will give you tips on driving the moving truck successfully and remind you of the mileage limits.
The only thing that isn’t free is the gas in the moving truck. Before you return the truck to our storage facility, you need to refill the gas tank. If you drive under 40 miles, that should only cost you a few dollars!
This way, when the next customer needs to use the moving truck, they also start with a full tank of gas.
