GET READY FOR WINTER’S WORST

Winter is coming. Are you ready for it? If you’re not renting a climate-controlled storage unit during this sensitive season, you need to winterize your storage unit and defend it against freezing temperatures.

No matter what you are storing, following these tips will help protect your belongings from whatever this Winter could throw your way.

#1: Get Rid of the Junk

Is your storage unit full of items you haven’t seen in months, or years? Take this opportunity to finally visit your storage unit and go through everything you have there.

Investing in a storage unit is only beneficial if you’re doing so to protect items that are worth keeping. Don’t waste your money on storing junk, especially during wintertime!

To winterize your storage unit, you need to maximize its efficiency. If you see an item is rusted, damaged, or deformed, fix it or get rid of it. If you come across an item you will never need again, donate it. It’s time to get rid of the clutter!

#2: Clean Your Unit

The best way to avoid damage, discoloration, or disintegration with your valuables during winter is to clean them thoroughly:

  • Launder all clothing and linens
  • Remove dirt and grime from any equipment
  • Detach gas containers from gas-powered engines, like those found on weed eaters and leaf blowers
  • Dust any shelving units and re-organize boxes

If you clean your unit now, you will be better protected from winter weather that can wreak havoc on anything stored outdoors.

#3: Protect Your Items

With colder temperatures approaching, it is always a good idea to have furniture blankets on hand. Cover and wrap your furniture to protect your pieces from freezing and warping.

If you’re storing a bedroom set, mattress bags are also a great idea to avoid allowing dust to form on your mattress.

After you fully winterize your storage unit, make sure that your insurance is up to date, too. Don’t let it lapse when you could potentially need it most.
