FIVE TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL VEHICLE STORAGE


Your vehicle is your baby, so you assume a lot of responsibility to care for it and enjoy it. That’s why when winter rolls around, most car owners look for secure storage solutions.

Although storing your vehicle in a storage unit may sound like an easy enough task, there are few extra precautions we recommend you take first.

#1: Stabilize Your Fuel

Before leaving your vehicle in a storage unit, always make sure it has fresh fuel in the tank. If the car will be left there for several months, you can also add a fuel stabilizer. This helps prevent:

  • your tank from rusting
  • your gas from evaporating, and
  • your fuel system from deteriorating.

All in all, it helps to maximize your fuel and save you money.

#2: Add Fresh Oil

Just as you need to add fresh fuel to your car, you also need to add oil. Old oil can start to thicken and deteriorate if left for an extended period in a storage unit.

Go ahead and give your vehicle a fresh oil change to avoid issues when you hit the ignition switch in a few months.

#3: Protect Your Tires

To protect your tires and wheels from any potential damage, we recommend putting tire jacks under your car while it’s in storage. Over time, air can leak from your tires and put more weight and strain on your wheels. We don’t want that to happen!

By having jacks placed under them, your tires will be supported under the vehicle’s weight.

#4: Unhook the Battery

This is a very important tip for those first learning how to store a car.

Think about it: batteries leak battery acid even in the most regularly driven vehicles. Imagine the corrosion that could happen inside and outside your car if that were to happen while sitting in storage.

By unhooking your car battery before you leave your storage unit, you can save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run.

#5: Get a Cover

Our last tip is to wash your car and get it a nice cover. Car covers can shield your paint job from any settling dust or dirt that may build over time in a storage unit.

This way, the next time you’re want to take your car out for a spin, it will look shiny as new and ready to go.
