TIPS TO AVOID COLD & FLU SEASON

It’s that time of year, everybody. The flu is going around, making its way through your circles of family, friends, and co-workers. We even have the threat of the coronavirus epidemic to worry about!

But, at Modern Storage®, we want all our customers to stay calm and carry on. If you’re moving day falls during cold and flu season, it just takes some preventative measures to keep yourself from catching a bug. That’s why we’re here to give you our five tips on how to NOT get sick this season.

#1: Stay Hydrated

Hydration is a very important part of cold and flu prevention. Staying hydrated while you’re moving can keep your nose and throat moist and help boost your immune system, leaving your body better prepared to defend itself against harmful germs.

#2: Dust Your Items

During the moving process, you will likely be transporting items that have remained in the same spot in your home or office for a long period of time. If these items have not been regularly cleaned, there will be dust build-up.

Living in the dust are little bugs called dust mites, which carry many chemicals and toxins that can cause you to get sick if you breathe them in. So, give your belongings a good dusting before you start moving!

#3: Wash Your Hands

We get it: When you’re trying to move, keeping your hands clean isn’t your top priority. But during cold and flu season, you cannot afford to skip washing your hands thoroughly and often.

While illnesses like the flu don’t infect you through your skin, they can make their way into your mouth if you touch your face without washing your hands. Once germs make their way to the mucosal membranes in your mouth, you can find yourself infected with the flu.

#4: Wear Warm Clothing

Cold weather can dry out your nose and leave you very susceptible to developing a cold or catching the flu. Some scientists even say dry, colder weather makes it easier for airborne germs to remain airborne and travel from person to person!

Then (because it’s cold outside), infected people will likely stay inside closer to one another and pass these particles between them.

So, while you’re moving, we don’t want you to be afraid to go outside and get the job done. Just make sure you’re wearing clean, warm clothes like scarves, sweaters, gloves, hats, and jackets so you don’t freeze.

#5: Get Adequate Sleep

Leading up to a big move, we’re sure you’re feeling a lot of stress and not sleeping well. But, a lack of adequate sleep can make you more vulnerable to catching the flu or a common cold.Every night for a few nights leading up to moving day, make sure you get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. A good night’s rest can help boost your immune system so that it can defend itself from any foreign germs. While taking these measures may not guarantee you will avoid getting sick, they certainly are better than doing nothing.
