THREE STEPS TO PREVENTING MOLD GROWTH

Mold is a pesky problem we all want to avoid, and preventing it starts with you.

While every Modern Storage® facility is focused on security and cleanliness, there is only so much our staff can do if you do not help yourself and actively avoid promoting mold growth in your unit.

For example, if you leave dirty, damp, or damaged items in your storage unit, you are asking for mold to invade your space and spread like wildfire!

Thankfully, mold is easy enough to avoid if you follow our lead. Our storage experts have a few tips to offer you, starting with taking three simple steps.

Step #1: Clean Everything Thoroughly

The best way to prevent mold from growing and spreading is to make sure all your items are completely mold-free before you put them away in storage unit:

  • Wipe down and cover your furniture.
  • Vacuum out couches and chairs to remove any crumbs and wayward particles.
  • Clean out and disinfect any appliances, such as refrigerators or microwaves.
  • Launder your clothing, bedding, linens, and other fabrics.
  • Cover your mattresses. (Our facilities sell mattress covers and other moving supplies if you need to purchase some.)
  • Dust all your items.

Also remember that food and other perishable items are not permitted in your storage unit here at Modern Storage®, as they have the potential to promote mold growth.

Step #2: Rent a Climate-Controlled Unit

If you are concerned about mold and mildew, we highly recommend renting a climate-controlled storage unit.

By going this route, you can reduce the risk of atmospheric conditions affecting the integrity of your belongings.

All the climate-controlled storage units offered at Modern Storage® are enclosed in temperature-controlled buildings, where the air is conditioned to be kept between 59 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. This helps protect your unit from the humidity and extreme temperature changes Arkansas is known for.

Step #3: Sign Up for Tenant Insurance

When you reserve a storage unit at any Modern Storage® facility, we also give you the option of adding a tenant insurance policy to your account via a third party (SBOATI). Insurance can cover you if you experience damage or mold growth due to an unforeseen disaster you did not cause.

You can also consult with your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance provider to see if your policy also covers items you own while they are stored in a storage facility.

Overall, by keeping your items clean, dry, secure, and protected, you can prevent mold from growing in your storage unit.
