Halloween-inspired self storage scene representing common storage myths coming back from the dead
Some storage myths just won't stay buried. It's time to put a few of them back in the ground.

Every industry has myths that somehow refuse to disappear. Self storage has plenty. In honor of Halloween, we're digging up some of the self storage myths that refuse to stay buried—and separating the facts from the zombie myths that keep wandering around long after they should have disappeared.

Why Do These Storage Myths Keep Coming Back?

Some storage advice has been repeated for so long that people assume it must be true.

But self storage has changed, and the reasons people use it are much broader than simply having too much stuff.

So, in the spirit of Halloween, we're rounding up the myths that apparently cannot be killed.

Zombie Myth #1: Storage Is Only for Moving

Moving and self storage definitely go together, but that's only one reason someone might need additional space.

People use storage during renovations, while staging a home for sale, during temporary work assignments, when children leave for college, when combining households, and simply to rotate belongings they don't need year-round.

  • Seasonal decorations
  • Furniture during renovations
  • College belongings
  • Business inventory and appropriate equipment
  • Household overflow
  • Temporary relocation belongings
  • Sports and recreational gear
  • Items during major life transitions

Sometimes storage isn't about moving at all. It's simply about making the space you're already living or working in function better.

Zombie Myth #2: You Need a Huge Unit

More space isn't automatically the right space.

If you're storing closet overflow, seasonal decorations, or a small collection of boxes, you may not need a unit designed for the contents of an entire house.

On the other hand, squeezing an entire household into a unit that's too small can make organization and access difficult.

Zombie Myth #3: Climate Control Makes Everything Invincible

Climate-controlled storage can be a great option for certain belongings, but it isn't a magical protective force field.

Climate control provides a more consistent environment and may be worth considering for furniture, electronics, clothing, photographs, collectibles, documents, and other belongings that can be sensitive to significant temperature and humidity changes.

Items still need to be clean, completely dry, appropriately packed, and stored according to manufacturer recommendations.

Zombie Myth #4: Storage Means Signing a Long Lease

This one can go back underground.

Modern Storage® offers month-to-month rentals, so you don't have to commit to an annual or multi-year lease.

That flexibility can be especially useful when you aren't exactly sure how long you'll need storage—for example, during a renovation, temporary move, home sale, construction delay, or other transition.

Zombie Myth #5: Everything Belongs in a Cardboard Box

Cardboard boxes are useful, but they aren't automatically the best choice for every item.

Some belongings may be better suited to sturdy plastic containers, garment storage, original packaging, specialty containers, or other packing methods.

The right option depends on what you're storing, how long you're storing it, and how frequently you'll need access.

Zombie Myth #6: If It Fits, It's Packed Correctly

Successfully closing the storage unit door is not the same thing as successfully packing a storage unit.

Stacking everything wherever it fits may work on move-in day. The problem appears three months later when the one container you need is behind an entire wall of furniture.

  • Keep heavier, sturdier items lower
  • Avoid placing excessive weight on fragile belongings
  • Label containers on more than one visible side
  • Group similar belongings together
  • Keep frequently needed items accessible
  • Leave yourself enough room to safely reach belongings when practical

Zombie Myth #7: You Won't Need Anything Until Move-Out

This belief usually lasts until someone suddenly needs the holiday decorations, tax documents, winter coat, camping equipment, or one very specific box.

If there's a reasonable chance you'll need something while it's stored, plan for it before move-in.

A simple inventory and thoughtful placement can prevent a five-minute retrieval from becoming a full-unit excavation.

Zombie Myth #8: All Storage Facilities Are Basically the Same

A storage unit may look simple from the outside, but the overall experience can vary considerably from one facility to another.

Cleanliness, maintenance, customer service, unit types, security features, access options, moving resources, technology, and available amenities can all make a difference.

Modern Storage® focuses on clean, well-maintained facilities, modern conveniences, security features, and customer service designed to make storage feel easier. Specific amenities and features vary by location.

Zombie Myth Bonus Round: I'll Remember What's in Every Box

No, you won't.

You may be completely confident today that you'll remember the blue container has Christmas decorations and the gray one has kitchen supplies.

Six months from now, they're both mystery containers.

Label them. Future you has enough going on.

Final Thoughts

Some myths disappear as soon as you learn the facts. Others apparently rise from the grave every few months and start wandering around again.

Self storage can be short-term or longer-term, useful for much more than moving, and tailored to what you actually need to store. The right unit, packing strategy, and facility can make a significant difference in the experience.

So this Halloween, we're putting these zombie storage myths back where they belong. If they show up again next year, we'll be ready.

Is self storage only for people who are moving?

No. Moving is one common reason people use storage, but units can also be helpful during renovations, seasonal organization, downsizing, temporary relocations, business growth, college transitions, and other situations where extra space is useful.

Do I have to rent a storage unit for a long time?

Not at Modern Storage®. Rentals are month-to-month, so you don't have to commit to an annual or multi-year lease. Review your rental agreement for applicable move-out notice requirements.

Does climate-controlled storage guarantee my belongings won't be damaged?

No. Climate-controlled storage provides a more consistent environment, but it does not make belongings damage-proof. Items should still be properly cleaned, dried, packed, and stored.

Is a bigger storage unit always better?

Not necessarily. The right size depends on what you're storing and how you plan to use the space. Choosing an appropriately sized unit can help you avoid paying for space you don't need.

Are all self storage facilities basically the same?

No. Unit types, security features, cleanliness, customer service, access options, business amenities, moving resources, and other features can vary significantly between facilities.

Storage options, unit sizes, amenities, access features, and availability vary by Modern Storage® facility. Customers should review their rental agreement and contact their facility with questions about specific storage needs.
